Explained! Why Are India England Players Wearing Black Armbands On Day 2 Of Headingley Test (Source: X)
England and India players are wearing black armbands on Day 3 of the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, to pay their respect to the former England cricketer David 'Syd' Lawrence, who passed away at the age of 61 after battling Motor Neurone Disease (MND ).
David made his debut in 1988 and played five Tests for England, taking 18 wickets, including a five-wicket haul against the West Indies, where he also dismissed the great Viv Richards. His career, however, could not take off due to a knee injury in 1992. He was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, a deadly neurological disorder that causes muscle weakness, which gets worse with time, in 2023.

England Fightback After Jaiswal, Gill, Pant Centuries
Coming back to the first Test, England fought back well after centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant put them on the backfoot. Four wickets each by Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue on day 2 meant that India slipped from 430-3 to 471 all-out.
England came out with a positive intent and milked easy runs. They faced resistance from Jasprit Bumrah, who was brilliant and picked three wickets, but got no support from the other end. Ollie Pope scored a hundred to put England in a comfortable position. At the time of writing, England were 238-4, trailing India by 233 runs. Pope was the first wicket to fall on Day 3 and was removed by Prasidh Krishna.
