India were woeful with their catching on Day 3 of the first Test at Headingley. It was literally a horror show as catches went down often during the day, which not only let England off the hook but also saw Jasprit Bumrah endure one of his unlucky spells.
Bumrah had four catches dropped off his bowling, tying the record for most drops by an Indian bowler in a single innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal was responsible for three of those drops. England capitalised on these errors, with Ollie Pope and Ben Duckett scoring significant runs.
Three Times India Paid Dearly:
Ollie Pope, dropped on 62, went on to score 106.
Ben Duckett, put down on 15, ended with 62.
Harry Brook was reprieved multiple times — a no-ball on 0, then shelled chances on 46 and 82 — before finally falling for 99.
Watching from the dressing room, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir cut a visibly frustrated figure. Gambhir, who is known for his no-nonsense approach wore a stern look on his face as India’s bowlers toiled, trying to keep up the morale as alarm bells started ringing.
“Catches win matches — but only if they’re held,” summed up voices online.
As England surged near to India's total, apart from counting regrets, fans were quick to point out what was missing: Virat Kohli’s intensity in the slips.
Meanwhile, KL Rahul's composed unbeaten 47 took India to 90 for 2 in their second innings at stumps on the third day of the opening Test against England here on Sunday. I
India's overall lead stood out at 96 with Rahul having skipper Shubman Gill for company. Sai Sudharsan was well set on 30 before Ben Stokes removed him. He added 66 with Rahul for the second wicket.
England negated India's first innings score of 471 to reach 465 riding on Harry Brook's 99. Jasprit Bumrah took 5 for 83 while Prasidh Krishna took 3 for 128.
