Yashasvi Jaiswal created history and etched his name in the record books en route to his century on the opening day of the Leeds Test match against England. The left-handed batsman had a day to remember and he scored 101 off in just 159 balls. The India opener had cramps in both hands but it didn't matter much to him.
Yashasvi overcame the pain to achieve a never-before-done milestone. As he completed his century on day 1, Yashasvi became the first-ever left-handed Indian opener to breach the three-figure mark in England.
As many as 15 Indian openers have scored a century in England, but all of them batted right-handed. For the first time since 1932, the year in which India made their Test debut against England, a left-handed Indian opener scored a century in England.
Yashasvi negated the England pacers' early threat and played his natural game. He breached the 50-run mark off the 96th ball he faced. Yashasvi increased his scoring rate after completing the half-century and breached the three-figure mark off 144 balls. He departed soon after the second session.
India captain, Shubman Gill, also shone on the opening day and remained unbeaten on 127 off 175 balls. He achieved a huge milestone and became the fifth Indian captain to score a century on his Test captaincy debut. Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar and Virat Kohli achieved this feat before Shubman.
Courtesy of a combined effort from the Indian batsmen, the visiting team finished the day with a total of 359/3 on the board. They would aim to bat for more than two sessions on the second day and put on a total of more than 500.
Rishabh Pant finished the opening day on a score of 65 and he is just 35 runs away from the three-figure mark. KL Rahul missed out on a well-deserved half-century and departed for 42 off 78 balls. Debutant Sai Sudharsan departed for a four-ball duck.
