Shubman Gill-led India dominated the proceedings on the opening day of the first Test match against England in Leeds. Captain Shubman and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal slammed centuries as the visitors finished the day with a total of 359/3 on the board. Shubman remained unbeaten on 127 off 175 balls. Yashasvi scored a brilliant 101 off 159 balls.
He and KL Rahul negated England pacers' early threat and added 91 runs for the first wicket. Rahul was dismissed for 42 off 78 balls. Sachin Tendulkar was elated after India's dominant show on the opening day and shared a special post for the Indian batters.
Their heroics reminded the Master Blaster of the 2002 Leeds Test match, where he, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid scored centuries. "A solid foundation laid by @klrahul and @ybj_19 enabled India to have a good day. Congratulations to Yashasvi and @ShubmanGill for their brilliant centuries. @RishabhPant17’s contribution was equally important for the team. India’s batting today reminded me of the Headingley Test in 2002, when Rahul, @SGanguly99, and I scored hundreds in the first innings, and we went on to win the Test. Today, Yashasvi and Shubman have done their part. Who will be the third centurion this time?" he wrote on X.
Ganguly quickly responded to 'champ' Sachin and made a bold prediction. The former India captain namedropped Rishabh Pant and Karun Nair and predicted that they could also score centuries, taking India's tally of centurions to four.
"Hi Champ .. this time it could be 4 .. on this good surface .. pant and may be karun .. the surface on day 1 in 2002 .. was a bit different then this," Ganguly wrote.
Vice-captain Rishabh Pant is batting on 65 off 102 balls and is just 35 runs away from the three-figure mark. Karun will come out to bat at number 6. The right-handed batsman is playing his first Test match since March 2017.
Ben Stokes was England's most successful bowler on the opening day. He scalped the key wickets of Yashasvi and debutant Sai Sudharsan. Brydon Carse took the prized wicket of KL Rahul.
