Mumbai Indians' (MI) IPL 2025 season came to an end following the defeat at the hands of Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the second qualifier on Sunday (June 1). The five-time IPL Champions failed to defend a big target of 204 against Punjab Kings (PBKS), who are now set to play their second IPL final.
MI's bowlers did get two wickets in the powerplay but they could never slow down PBKS' scoring rate. Much was expected from Jasprit Bumrah but he struggled with the ball and leaked 40 runs. The lead pacer went wicketless.
MI's struggles in the second innings prompted Mahela Jayawardene to take over the charge. The MI head coach was constantly seen passing instructions to the players on the field.
Harbhajan Singh didn't seem to be amused with Jayawardene's actions and he slammed the MI's coaching staff. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Harbhajan said: "Look at the Mumbai Indians dugout. When they were leaking runs, there was too much involvement from the outside."
"The coaches are telling a bowler like Jasprit Bumrah what to do and what not. A dressing room needs to remain calm and composed. Coaches should only give advice. Don’t show desperation. So somewhere I felt that when this happens way too much, it breaks the player’s spirit," he added.
Harbhajan is the former captain of MI. He represented the franchise from IPL 2008 to 2017. Harbhajan worked with Jayawardene in his final year at the franchise.
MI finished 4th in points table
MI bounced back strongly after a struggling start to the season and finished in fourth place. The Hardik Pandya-led side registered 8 wins from 14 matches. They defeated Gujarat Titans in the eliminator to make it to the second qualifier. But the five-time IPL Champions failed to qualify for the final for the fifth consecutive season.
