Sunil Gavaskar Goes Wild Over Shreyas Iyer’s Tactical Coup Against Rohit Sharma (BCCI/IPL)

Punjab Kings vs Mumbai Indians, Qualifier 2, IPL 2025: Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar hailed Shreyas Iyer's captaincy after Marcus Stoinis dismissed Rohit Sharma in the third over of the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Rohit tried to put pressure on Stoinis early on in the over by trying to hoick one over deep square-leg, but could not time it properly and found the man stationed at the deep. As soon as the wicket fell, Gavaskar was quick to point out Iyer's brilliance in getting the field right that led to Rohit's downfall.
"Big boundary that and so unless you middle it, you are going to get into trouble. Let's have a look at whether he middled it or not. Maybe, toe end of the bat, but you are always taking a chance and the fielder did not have to move an inch here or there. Brilliant captaincy. Brilliant field placing by Shreyas Iyer," said Gavaskar on commentary during the match.
Earlier, Punjab Kings won the toss and elected to field first. While Yuzvendra Chahal made his way back to the PBKS side, Mumbai Indians were forced to make a change, as Richard Gleeson made way for Reece Topley. Gleeson was ruled out of the Qualifier 2 due to a niggle. The match was delayed due to rain, but it started at the nick of time, and no overs were lost. PBKS start as favourites to win the contest, but only by that bit, as Mumbai Indians, after coming off a resounding win against Gujarat Titans, will be confident to get past Punjab on Sunday.
The winner of the Qualifier 2 between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians will take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2025 final on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. RCB beat PBKS in Qualifier 1 to book their place in the final. There is a reserve day in the final, in case rain plays spoilsport on Tuesday.
