Suryakumar Yadav etched his name in the record books and created history during the second qualifier of IPL 2025. The right-handed batsman continued his form and once again breached the 25-run mark. Suryakumar scored 44 off 26 balls as Mumbai Indians (MI) put on a huge total of 203/6 on the board.
Suryakumar achieved a huge feat en route to his innings of 44 and became the first MI batsman to score more than 700 runs in an IPL season. He bats in the middle-order and scoring more than 700 runs is a big achievement for any non-opener.
In fact, Suryakumar is the first non-opener to breach the 700-run mark in an IPL season. With 717 runs, he is the second-highest run-scorer in the ongoing season. Sai Sudharsan, who ended the season with 759 runs in 15 matches, is at the top spot.
Suryakumar is just 43 runs away from Sudharsan's tally and will have an opportunity to win the Orange cap if MI play one more match. The Hardik Pandya-led side will qualify for the final if they defeat Punjab Kings.
MI only have one Orange Cap
Mumbai Indians only have one Orange Cap despite being part of the tournament since its inception. Sachin Tendulkar won the Orange Cap in IPL 2010. He also shone on the captaincy front and led the team to the final of the season. MI lost to Chennai Super Kings in the final.
Suryakumar Yadav will become only the second MI batsman after Sachin to win the Orange Cap if MI make it to the final and Suryakumar scores 43 runs in the fixture.
Suryakumar's MI career
Suryakumar played his first IPL game for MI in 2012. He only played one match in the season. He returned to MI in the IPL 2018 mega-auction and has been with them since then. His success in IPL 2020 saw him make his India debut in March 2021. Suryakumar is the present T20I captain of India.
