Joe Root created history and etched his name in record books during the second ODI of the three-match series against West Indies on Sunday (June 1). The right-handed batsman achieved the milestone during England's quest for 309. Root made his ODI debut in 2013. He was part of the England team which won the 2019 World Cup.

Root, who scored a half-century in the ongoing fixture against WI, has now become England's highest run-scorer in ODIs. He pipped Eoin Morgan to achieve the milestone. Root has 6958* runs in 179 ODIs. His tally includes 17 centuries and 42 half-centuries.

Morgan, the former England white-ball captain, finished his career with 6957 runs in 225 ODIs. Morgan hit 13 centuries and 42 half-centuries. He was England's captain in the 2019 WC. With 5416 runs, Ian Bell sits at the third spot.

Joe Root made his ODI debut against India in January 2013. He hit his maiden ODI century a year later. Root cemented his spot in the years to come and has played all three ODI World Cups played since his debut. He didn't play an ODI after the 2023 WC for over a year.

Root returned ahead of the 2025 Champions Trophy and shone in the ICC event. He piled up 225 runs in three matches to finish as the tournament's fourth-highest run-scorer. Root hit a century and a half-century in the tournament.

Joe Root is playing his 179th match and could finish his career with more than 200 ODI caps. He is at the fifth spot in the list of players to play the most ODIs for England. Morgan played 225 ODIs for England and acquires the top spot. He is followed by Paul Collingwood, who played 197 ODIs.
