Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill held back his emotions as his team failed to win the Eliminator against Mumbai Indians on Friday. The GT suffered a 20-run defeat.
Chasing 228, GT fell short of the target despite Sai Sudharsan playing a valiant 80 off 49 balls and Washington Sundar scoring a quickfire 48 off 24. Brilliant bowling by Jasprit Bumrah, who took the wicket of Washington, restricted the GT to 208 for 6 in 20 overs.
Mumbai Indians will now face Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2, with a spot in the final up for grabs. Royal Challengers Bengaluru qualified for the IPL 2025 final by winning Qualifier 1 against PBKS.
For GT, it was a moment of heartbreak since they dominated most of the season but ran out of gas in the final frontier. And after the defeat to Mumbai Indians, the team that struggled for the majority of the season before raising their level when it mattered the most, a visibly dejected Gill lamented his team’s exit from the IPL 2025.
"Brilliant game of cricket, we were right in it. Last three-four overs didn't go our way but still a good game. Definitely not easy when we drop 3 sitters. Wasn't easy for the bowlers to control and doesn't help when you drop 3 catches," Gill said at the post-match presentation.
"Message was simple (for Sai and Washington). Just play the game you want to play and the goal was the same for both of them — to make us win. Because of the dew, the wicket did become a little easier for us," he added.
"Definitely a lot of positives for us. Last 2-3 games didn't go our way but credit to all the players, especially Sai — he was terrific for us this season. 210 would've been par for us on this pitch," said Gill.
For Mumbai Indians, Rohit Sharma played a remarkable 81-run knock off 50 balls, while Jonny Bairstow, making his first appearance this season after joining MI, made an immediate impact with a 47-run knock off 22 balls.
Rohit, meanwhile, was dropped twice — on 3 and 12 — as the butterfingers of the GT players allowed MI to make a solid start to the game. MI scored 81 from the opening wicket partnership. Gerald Coetzee and Kusal Mendis were the players who dropped the catches.
Thanks to the early reprieve, Rohit surpassed the 7000-run mark in IPL. He brought up his 47th IPL half-century with a boundary. While chasing the target, Gujarat Titans got off to a disastrous start, with Trent Boult trapping opener Gill lbw for 1 in the first over.
Despite enjoying a stellar season, Gill, who scored 650 runs from 15 matches at an average of 50, could not fire in the Eliminator. But Sudharsan, who is now the tournament’s top scorer with 759 runs, played a solid innings to keep them in the hunt with 80 off 49 balls.
But in the end, it was never enough, as none other than Sudharsan and Washington could contribute much in front of the experienced bowling department of Mumbai Indians.
