India are set to iundergo a massive tectonic shift in Test Cricket as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have announced their retirement from the longest format of the game, with just over a month remaining for the crucial five-match Test Series vs England in England. Rohit's retirement means that India will need to find a new captain for red-ball cricket. Legendary all-rounder and former India head coach Ravi Shastri has now thrown in two names in the mix, with one being Shubman Gill, who is the favourite to take over from Rohit Sharma.

In an interaction with Sanjana Ganesan on the ICC Review Show, Ravi Shastri said that Shubman Gill should get the opportunity of becoming the next Test captain since he can be groomed with age on his side. He also took the name of Rishabh Pant as another potential captaincy candidate.

“You groom somebody and I would say Shubman's looked very good. Give him the opportunity. He's 25, 26 years of age, even give him time. There's Rishabh as well. I think these two are the obvious ones I'm looking at because of their age and they have a decade ahead of them," Ravi Shastri said.

Ravi Shastri also mentioned that he would not like to see Jasprit Bumrah as the captain of the Indian team, as it would put extra pressure on his mind and might hamper his bowling.

“See for me, Jasprit would have been the obvious choice after Australia. But I don't want Jasprit to be made captain and then you lose him as a bowler. I think he (Bumrah) has to take his body one game at a time. He's coming back now after a serious injury. He'll have played IPL cricket, which is four-over cricket. Now will come the test of bowling 10 overs, 15 overs (in Tests). And the last thing you want is some pressure on his mind being captain as well,” Shastri added.
