Rohit Sharma was handed the ultimate honour by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday (May 16) as a stand named after him was unveiled in a special programme which was attended by his family as well as Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The governing body of Mumbai cricket also added to the glory of the iconic stadium by unveiling stands named after former Indian captain Ajit Wadekar and veteran cricket administrator Shard Pawar. The stadium, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025, previously had stands named after Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Vijay Merchant, and Dilip Vengsarkar.
Rohit won the hearts of cricket fans as after delivering a heartfelt speech, he went down from the stage to bring his mother and father while also calling his wife. Rohit also let his parents press the buzzer alongside Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis.
As the world saw the first glimpse of the 'Rohit Sharma stand' as one of world cricket's most iconic venues, Rohit's wife Ritika was evidently emotional and in tears. The video of her reaction quickly went viral across social media.

Rohit will play at the venue for the first time in front of the stand named after him on May 21, when Mumbai Indians (MI) host Delhi Capitals (DC) in their final home match of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). The five-time champions will also be the Hardik Pandya-led team's first match of the season since the restart. The Rohit-starrer team have only two matches left in the 2025 season and cannot afford a defeat in the race to the playoffs.
Rohit is India's fourth-highest run-getter across formats in international cricket with 19700 runs, which include 49 centuries. He is only the second Indian captain after MS Dhoni to win multiple ICC events. Last week, Rohit announced his retirement from Test cricket. He remains only an active ODI player now for India, having bid adieu to T20Is post the 2024 T20 World Cup win.
