Mumbai, widely known as the home of Indian cricket, will get a stadium of a capacity worthy of its stature and size by 2030, confirmed Maharashtra Chief Minister (CM) Devendra Fadnavis on Friday (May 16) in a special event.
CM Fadnavis made the remarks during a special event held at the iconic Wankhede Stadium to unveil three new stands at the venue, with one named after Indian ODI captain Rohit Sharma, as well as legendary skipper Ajit Wadekar and veteran cricket administrator Sharad Pawar.
While addressing the gathering, CM Fadnavis revealed that if the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) make a proposal, the Maharashtra government will allocate them land to build the new venue with a capacity of 100,000. He further called for the new stadium to be built within five years to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the venue in 2030.
"Last year, Kale (late MCA president Amol Kale) and Ajinkya Naik (current MCA president) had come to me with a request that the MCA needed to build one more stadium of minimum 1,00,000-crowd capacity. And now today, I'm assuring Ajinkya that if you come with a proposal, then the Maharashtra government will give you an appropriate good piece of land for the MCA to build its own big stadium, which can seat 1,00,000 spectators. Maharashtra and Mumbai is a state of passionate cricket lovers. Everyone knows about Mumbai's contribution to (world) cricket," said CM Fadnavis.
"After four years, the MCA will be completing it's 100 years. So by then, we should have our new stadium ready. And whatever the MCA needs to do in order to build that (stadium), we will provide that," Fadnavis added.
MCA President Ajinkya Naik revealed that the location will be based in the Amme region of Thane district. However, other locations are not ruled out.
"He very much wants to do it (build a new stadium). He's a person with a progressive, positive mindset. He (also) wants that the MCA should've a stadium with a capacity of minimum 1,00,000 fans. And we have already applied for a place in Amne in Thane district. There's a chance that we may get a place somewhere else too. But the place in Amne is in our mind. Whatever the state government will allot us, we would love to have a big new stadium," said Naik to Times of India.
The Wankhede Stadium is marking its 50th anniversary this year after being constructed in 1975. The stadium was renovated and built again from scratch ahead of the 2011 World Cup. The summit clash of the mega event was held at the venue as MS Dhoni-led Indian cricket team completed a dream campaign at home to lift the trophy at the venue after beating Sri Lanka at the venue.
The ground has seen some of the greatest moments in Indian cricket history, including Sachin Tendulkar's retirement match and Virat Kohli's 50th ODI century. It also hosted the semi-final of the 1987 and 2023 World Cup as well as the 2016 T20 World Cup.
Wankhede is one of three Test venues in the city. India's first-ever international match at home was held at the Gymkhana Stadium in Mumbai. However, that is the only international match the ground hosted. The Cricket Club of India's (CCI) Brabourne Stadium, which is less than a kilometre away from the Wankhede Stadium was the main cricketing hub of the city of nearly four decades.
Currently, the Wankhede Stadium has a capacity of nearly 34,000 people while Brabourne Stadium can host 20,000 people. Navi Mumbai's DY Patil Stadium has hosted several IPL and women's cricket international matches in the last few years and has a capacity of around 45,000 people. The ground was scheduled to host an men's international game in 2009 between India and Australia, which was washed out.
