Mumbai Indians' (MI) six-match winning streak in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) came to an end after a dramatic clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where Gujarat Titans (GT) beat them by three wickets after a last-ball thriller following a dramatic clash that saw multiple rain stoppages after off-season rain in the maximum city.
The result means that the Titans have upstaged the Indians and climbed to the top spot in the table after starting the day in fourth with a stunning tally of 16 points in just 11 games. MI have slipped to fourth spot in the table with 14 points in 12 games.

Mumbai Indians IPL 2025 Qualification Scenario

The Mumbai Indians are still in pole position for qualification and with matches against qualification rivals Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) coming up, two victories will seal their spot and even one win is likely to do the job due to their brilliant Net Run Rate (RR).

Mumbai's Top Two Hopes Over?

However, the Hardik Pandya-led sides' hopes of finishing in the top two have taken a major hit as they are now two points behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Gujarat Titans (GT), who both have one game in hand. Even third-place PBKS are one point ahead and have played a game less. The five-time champions need at least two teams among PBKS, RCB, and GT to lost at least tow of their remaining three matches while winning both of their own matches.
For those unversed, teams that finish in the top two get two chances to reach the final, while the team finishing in third and fourth have to win three matches in five days to lift the trophy.
Since in the introduction of the playoff system in 2011, the IPL title has been won by a team finishing in the top two in 13 of the 14 years with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2016 the only exception.
