  • David made a 26-ball 50
  • RCB made 95 runs despite being 42-7 at one stage
Tim David etched his name in the history books in a heroic one-man show for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Friday (April 18) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in a 14-over shootout despite his team's five-wicket defeat.
After the match was delayed by more than two hours, RCB's batting unit collapsed after Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to bowl first. Arshdeep Singh triggered a collapse with the wicket of Phil Salt and Virat Kohli in the powerplay. Apart from Rajat Patidar (23), no RCB top six batter managed to score more than four runs as the team sank to 42-7.
With RCB facing the embarrassment of scoring the lowest total in IPL history, Tim David rescued the team. He ensured they managed a respectable score of 95 on the board and avoided the humiliation of being bowled out in a 14-over game. David made 50 runs in just 26 balls in a knock that included five boundaries and three sixes.

Tim David Creates History

David etched his name in the history books by becoming the first player in IPL history to score a half-century in the highest first innings of an IPL match when the team total was less than 100. The RCB star broke Virat Kohli's record to become the player with a half-century in the lowest team total while batting first.
Players To Score Half-Century In Lowest First Innings Team Total
Player Team Opponet Score Team Score Ground Year
Tim David Royal Challengers Bengaluru Punjab Kings 50 of 26 balls* 95/9 Bengaluru 2025
Virat Kohli Royal Challengers Bengaluru Chennai Super Kings 56 of 29 balls * 106/2 Bengaluru 2013
Andre Russell Kolkata Knight Riders Chennai Super Kings 50 of 44 balls* 108/9 Chennai 2019
Ryan Mclaren Mumbai Indians Kings XI Punjab 51* of 43 balls 112/8 Navi Mumbai 2011
Sam Curran Chenani Super Kings Mumbai Indians 52 of 47 balls 114/9 Sharjah 2020
David also became only the second RCB batter in history to score a half-century after walking out to bat at number seven or below in an IPL match. The only other player to achieve the feat is Dinesh Karthik, who is currently the team's batting coach. The former Indian wicket-keeper batter scored a knock of 66 in 34 balls against Delhi Capitals in the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium.
David is also the second player to score a half-century at the Chinnaswamy Stadium while batting at number seven or below after Kieron Pollard, who made a 41-ball 50 for Mumbai Indians against RCB in 2012 in a five-wicket victory. David is the first RCB player to achieve the feat at their home venue as well as the first player to do it while batting first.
David is also the second number seven batter in IPL history to score a half-century and take two or more catches in the same match after Andre Russell, who also achieved the feat against PBKS (then known as Kings XI Punjab) in 2015 at Pune.
Despite RCB's defeat, David's heroics were rewarded with the Player of the Match (POTM). In IPL's history, a total of 1109 matches have been played (1102 completed), but a losing team player has been given the prize on just 28 occasions.
