KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • CSK named their second injury replacement
  • Dewald Brevis will play for CSK in IPL 2025
  • Gurajpneet Singh has been ruled out of IPL 2025
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made a major move in a bid to revive their sinking season and secured the signing of Dewald Brevis just days after naming 17-year-old Mumbai star Ayush Mhathre as Ruturaj Gaikwad's replacement for the season after the franchise captain was ruled out of the tournament due to an elbow fracture.
Brevis has been signed for CSK for Rs. 2.2 crore as an injury replacement for uncapped Indian pacer Gurjapneet Singh. This is the same amount for which Singh was purchased in the auction by the five-time champions. It is worth noting that an injury replacement can only be a player whose base price is lower or equal to the salary of the player being replaced. Brevis had a base price of Rs. 2 crore at the 2025 IPL mega auction and hence CSK were allowed to secure his signing.

Why were CSK Allowed To Sign An Overseas Capped Player As An Replacement For Uncapped Indian?

With IPL's strict regulations around the number of overseas players allowed in the squad and playing XI for all franchises, another key question around Brevis' signing is how a foreign player who has played for his country was allowed to replace an Indian player, that is yet to play international cricket.
At the 2025 IPL Mega Auction, CSK only signed six overseas players, while each IPL team is allowed to secure the services of a maximum of eight non-Indian players in their squad, which can have a minimum of 18 and a maximum of 25 players.
As the Super Kings had two overseas slots left, they had the chance to replace Gurjanpeet Singh with Brevis. The rules of players replacement do not mandate an uncapped player to be replaced with another player yet to debut for his country nor does it specify that an Indian player has to be replaced with another Indian.

Another point of contention is a batter replacing a bowler, but the IPL rules make no compulsion on the replacement being of a similar profile.
