Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have made a major scoop ahead of the blockbuster clash against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Sunday (April 20) by securing the signing of Dewald Brevis. Brevis, who was part of the MI set-up from 2022 to 2024 will play for the Super Kings for the rest of the season.
Brevis has replaced left-arm medium pacer Gurjapneet Singh in the squad, who suffered an injury and has been ruled out of the season. Earlier this week, the five-time champions confirmed the signing of 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre as an injury replacement for skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Brevis has played 10 IPL matches for the MI during his three-year stint and made 230 runs at an average of 23.00. He holds the unique feat of taking a wicket on the first ball of his IPL career by dismissing Virat Kohli. However, that also remains his sole wicket in the world's richest cricket league.
The right-handed batter played a key role in helping MI Cape Town win their maiden SA 20 title this year by making 291 runs in 10 matches at a strike-rate of 184.17, and comes into the 2025 IPL in red-hot form, having hit the most sixes in the competition this year and having the highest scoring rate too.
After a record-breaking U-19 World Cup campaign in 2022, the South African star sparked a bidding war at the 2022 IPL Mega Auction and was ultimately purchased by MI for a whopping Rs. 3 crore. Interestingly, Super Kings had bid till Rs. 2.8 crore for him then. However, the South African star went unsold in the 2025 IPL Mega Auction.

Brevis is yet to make a mark on international cricket, having played just two T20Is for South Africa in which he made five runs.
CSK will pay Brevis Rs. 2.2 crore, which is the same amount they purchased Gurjapneet in the auction.
