Star India batter Shreyas Iyer has opted out of Mumbai's last Ranji Trophy match to prepare for the England ODIs, according to a report in The Indian Express. Mumbai will face Meghalaya in the upcoming match which will be played at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC in the city and will be the last chance for the 42-time champions to qualify for the knockouts.
The report adds that India skipper Rohit Sharma had informed the Mumbai Cricket Association that he would not be playing the league's last match as well and instead will prepare for the upcoming three-match ODI series against England at home.
Mumbai lost to Jammu and Kashmir in their penultimate group game by five wickets as Yudhvir Singh Charak's seven-wicket haul trumped Shardul Thakur's valiant knocks across both innings.
“Iyer won’t be playing the next Ranji Trophy game as he will be preparing for white-ball cricket, so will Sharma and Jaiswal," a source in the Mumbai Cricket Association told The Indian Express. Iyer recently scored an unbeaten 137 against Pondicherry in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Rohit had a below-average outing for Mumbai, scoring just three and 28 runs in the two innings against Jammu and Kashmir. Iyer had saddening scores of 11 and 17, while Yashasvi Jaiswal just managed four and 26 runs in the two innings.
Mumbai are required to register an outright victory over Meghalaya to be in contention to qualify for the knockouts. They are placed third in Group A, with J&K topping it with 29 points while Krunal Pandya's Baroda are placed second with 27.
Rohit, Iyer and Jaiswal will have to report to Nagpur in the first week of February as they are part of the Indian side that will be playing three ODIs against England at home and later, they will fly to Dubai for the much-awaited Champions Trophy.
