Rishabh Pant has been in great form in the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy. He scored twin centuries in the first Test and backed it up with a fiery fifty at Edgbaston. Pant has already broken a plethora of records in his short Test career, and he is only getting better. The twin centuries by Pant made him only the second wicketkeeper-batter after Andy Flower to score two centuries in a Test. He has already hit the most centuries in Tests for India, and with hundreds in England, Australia, India, and South Africa, he has shown the ability to perform across different conditions.
Despite Pant's record-breaking numbers, former India cricketer R Ashwin highlighted an area where Pant needs to improve his game. Ashwin said Pant should play attacking cricket, but should be able to curb his instincts when there is a need to.
"I would like to see Rishabh Pant achieve his potential. We want him to entertain us, but he can do that and show restraint when needed. Pant is not a newbie anymore. I want to benchmark Pant to his standards," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
Pant has often been compared to Australia veteran Adam Gilchrist, but Ashwin feels that Pant's standards are far higher than the Australia great's. Ashwin said Pant has a great defensive game, which Gilchrist lacked; thus he should be compared only to the best batters.
"He is a fabulous player. He is not Adam Gilchrist, many compare him to Gilchrist. He didn't have such a good defence. Pant has a high-quality defence. He should be compared with some of the best batters, not Gilchrist. Rishabh Pant can do Pant things," he added.
