Jannik Sinner is very lucky to be in the Wimbledon 2025 quarterfinal. Sinner was down two sets to Grigor Dimitrov, but an unfortunate pec injury forced the Bulgarian to retire. Sinner wasn't 100 percent fit for the match and injured his elbow early in the game, which might have hampered his performance. The World No.1 is set to take on American Ben Shelton for a place in the semifinal. Shelton has been playing great tennis and defeated Lorenzo Sonego in the round of 16.
Sinner vs Shelton Head To Head
Sinner has a great record against Shelton, winning five out of the six games, including the only meeting on Grass. Sinner has not won a major title outside hard courts and is largely unproven on grass. There are concerns about his credentials on grass, and his performance against Dimitrov, his first major threat in Wimbledon, only adds to the doubt. The only other grass court specialist Sinner played recently was Alexander Bublik, a match he lost in the round of 16 in Halle.
Ben Shelton wasn't at his dominating best against Sonego, but like he always does, came out on top in tense moments and picked up a hard-fought win. Shelton might not look a grand slam contender, but he has the tools to beat anyone on his day. Shelton also has a terrific record at majors and reached the quarterfinals four times. His record includes two wins and a defeat.
Sinner will have multiple challenges to deal with in the quarterfinal. The injury will be a big concern, and knowing that Grigor deserved to be in the quarterfinal more than him will take a toll on his confidence. Still, Sinner is a far better player than Shelton and will start as the favourite, even if he is 80 percent fit. But unlike previous tournaments, he doesn't look unbeatable, which will keep Shelton in the game.
Prediction: Sinner to win in 5 sets.
