Former India captain Sourav Ganguly lavished praise on India skipper Shubman Gill for his magnificent double hundred in the second Test against England. Gill tormented the hosts, scoring 269 in 387 balls, including 30 fours and three sixes. His knock helped India post a daunting first innings total of 587 at Edgbaston.
Gill has been in terrific form in the series and also scored a century in the first Test. He came into the series with shaky form, and the leadership duties only added to the pressure. But Gill has responded to the challenges in fine fashion.
Ganguly was in awe of Gill's masterclass and hailed the knock as one of the best he has seen in England.
"An absolute masterclass from Gill... just flawless... one of the best innings I have seen in England in any era. So much improvement in the last few months. Probably, opening was not his place in Test cricket. A Test to win for India," Ganguly said of Gill on X.
Meanwhile, Gill shattered several records en route to his brilliant 269. He became the first Indian to score a 250+ score outside Asia. The record was previously held by Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 241 in Sydney in 2004. This was also the third highest score by an Indian in away Tests, behind Virender Sehwag's 309 in Multan, and Rahul Dravid's 270 in Rawalpindi. Gill also became the third Indian after Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid to score a double hundred in England, and joined the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, and Chris Gayle in the list of players with double hundreds in ODIs and Tests.
Gill's stunning knock was backed by impressive spells by Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj as India reduced England to 77-3 at stumps on Day 2 to take full control of the game.
