Nasser Hussain Not Happy With Shubman Gill At 4 Despite Record Breaking Start (Source: AP)
The leadership responsibilities have brought the best out of Shubman Gill on the England tour. Gill was named the captain of the side after Rohit Sharma retired from the format. With Kohli following Rohit, Gill demoted himself to the No.4 batting position. The results so far have been overwhelming for Gill, with two centuries in three innings. Gill stole the show on Day 1 of the second Test and played a brilliant knock of an unbeaten 114 to take India to 310-5 at stumps.
Despite his terrific start, former England captain Nasser Hussain is not happy with Gill batting at 4, and wants him to bat at 3. India have not had a stable No.3 following the exit of Cheteshwar Pujara. In the first Test against England, India tried Sai Sudharsan before leaving him out and promoting Karun Nair to the position in the second Test. However, both players failed to make a significant impact. Hussain said that India has done to Gill what England did to Root, not playing their best player at the critical No.3, adding that Gill looks naturally suited to the position.
"I think some people are just like that, he looks like a natural number three," Hussain said on Sky Sports after the Indian captain's seventh Test century.
"He's doing what, you know, England have done with Joe Root. I've often thought you've had lesser players than Joe Root at number three and you've had your best player at number four and he looks like a natural number three to me, Shubman Gill, but the pressure of captaincy and just also away from home when the ball has moved around, he has been found wanting a little bit, so just to come in when the ball stops moving around, but I thought he was really composed today, it was old-fashioned batting, he had to get in, grind out a score and then cash in in the last session," Hussain added.
Before Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal tormented the England attack and scored a blistering 87 to give India a fiery start in the second Test. Gill, along with Ravindra Jadeja (41*), will aim to take India near the 400 mark in the first innings.
