Shubman Gill has had a great start to life as the new India Test captain in his first two Test matches in the role against England. He continued his sparkling form with the bat in the ongoing second Test match against the Three Lions at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham. The India Test captain slammed his second consecutive century, after a 147 in the first innings of the first Test against England. Former England batter David Lloyd was very impressed with how Gill went about his batting and even compared him to another legendary India captain. It is neither Virat Kohli, nor MS Dhoni.
In his column on The Daily Mail, David Lloyd categorically stated that Gill's batting reminded him of Mohammad Azharuddin, especially because of his languid stroke play. However, he admitted that he found Gill a little confused as a captain in the loss in the first Test at Leeds.
Shubman Gill ended Day 1 being unbeaten on 114 runs from 216 balls. If he scores 36 more runs on Day 2 of the second Test then he will become the first Indian ever to slam in excess of 150 runs at Edgbaston. Virat Kohli holds the record for the highest Test score by an Indian at the venue, when he hit 149 in 2018.

"Shubman Gill has slotted in seamlessly at number four, with a century at Headingley and another hundred here. Batting looks effortless to him and he is wonderful to watch. He reminds me of Mohammad Azharuddin, who with his languid stroke play and relaxed mannerisms looked like nothing fazed him," Lloyd wrote.
"At just 25, Gill’s next challenge is to get comfortable with the captaincy because he looked a little confused at Leeds," he added.
