The footballing world was hit with tragedy on Thursday (July 3) as news emerged that star Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre had passed away in a car accident. Diogo died at the age of 28 while his brother was just 25. The incident reportedly took place in Spain at 12:30 AM local time in Zamora.
The news of the death has been confirmed by both the Portugual Football Association as well as Liverpool Football Club. The football fraternity was quick to react and pay condolences, with clubs and players from across the world expressing their grief.

At the time of his death, Diogo was away from footballing activities and on a post-season break following a memorable campaign in which he helped Liverpool win the 2024-25 Premier League title as well as playing a key part in Portugal's UEFA Nations League triumph.
Jota was born on 3rd December 1996 in Porto. He started his career after joining local club Pacos de Ferreira's youth system in 2013. He made his senior debut for the club in 2014 and played for them till 2016. Jota is primarily a left-winger, who also played a centre-forward.
In his stint for Pacoas, he played 45 matches across all competitions and scored two goals.
He moved to Atletico Madrid in 2016 but was loaned out to FC Porto. Diogo played for the Portuguese giants for one season in which he made 37 appearances and scored nine goals.
He was loaned out to Wolverhampton in 2017 and helped the club secure promotion to the Premier League before completing a permanent move to them the following season. Diogo stayed with Wolves till the 2019-20 season. In 131 appearances, he scored 44 goals.
Diogo secured a move to Liverpool in 2020 and became a key part of the squad first under Jurgen Klopp and later Andre Slot. The Portuguese star played 182 games for the English giants and scored 65 goals. He won the Premier League in the recently concluded 2024-25 season for the club while also lifting the EFL Cup twice (2020-21, 2023-24) as well as the FA Cup trophy in 2020-21.
Diogo received his maiden call-up to the Portugal national team in March 2019 and sealed his place as a regular in the squad in the years to come. Overall, he played 49 matches for his country and scored 14 goals. He was part of the Cristiano Ronaldo-led team that lifted the UEFA Nations League trophy in 2019 and 2025.

Jota's younger brother Andre, also died in the accident. He was also a footballer who played for second division side, Penafiel.
Jota got married to Rute Cardoso on June 22, 2025, just two weeks before his death. The couple dated each other for a long time and have three children together. His sons Denis and Duarte were born in 2021 and 2023, respectively. Last year, they became parents to a daughter.
