Tragedy struck in the sporting world on Thursday (July 3) as star footballer Diogo Jota tragically died in a road accident alongside his younger brother Adrian Silva (aged 25). Diogo is a key part of the Liverpool and Portugual teams while Adrian is also a footballer, who plays for Portuguese club Penafiel.
as per a report by the BBC, the incident happened at 12:30 AM IST in the Spanish province of Zamora. The published information reveals the two footballers were travelling in a Lamborghini and their car went left off the road while trying to overtake another vehicle and suffered a tyre blow-out and then caught fire.
The accident is said to have happened on the A52 highway. It has also been reported that the Spanish Civil Guard, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Department, and an emergency medical unit reported to the scene but could not rescue the two victims.
"Two young people die in an accident on the A-52 (Palacios de Sanabria). The Rionegro del Puente Fire Station (Northern Zone of the @DiputacionZA Consortium) responded. The vehicle caught fire, and the flames spread to the vegetation. "They were 28 and 26 years old. RIP," local authorities said in a statement.
Diogo's death was confirmed by both the Portugal Football Association (PFA) as well as the Liverpool Football Club.
Diogo is survived by his wife Rute Cardaso and three children. Digo and Rute got married to each other two weeks ago on June 22, 2025.
Diogo was currently on an off-season break after a remarkable season for both club and country. He played a key role in helping Liverpool win the 2024-25 Premier League title in Arne Slot's first season in charge. Diogo has been playing for Liverpool since 2020, when he was signed from Wolverhampton.
Diogo was also part of the Portugal team that won the UEFA Nations League title for the second time last month.
