Ravindra Jadeja etched his name in the history books on Day 2 of the second Test between England and India at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham on Thursday (July 2) as he played a stunning knock of 89 runs in 137 balls as India posted a massive total in the first innings after Ben Stokes won the toss and chose to bowl
Jadeja walked out to bat on the first day of play with the team in deep trouble, 211-5 in the third session. However, the 36-year-old sent a stern reminder to his status as the world's top-ranked all-rounder by putting up a massive partnership of 203 runs for the sixth wicket with Shubman Gill.

Ravindra Jadeja Creates History

While Jadeja missed out on his century, the star all-rounder set a world record as he became the first visiting player to be involved in multiple partnerships of more than 200 runs at Edgbaston. Jadeja had also been involved in a 222-run partnership on the ground in 2022 with Rishabh Pant for the sixth wicket. Overall, there have been seven instances of a double-century partnership in Birmingham from away team players and Jadeja is the only player to feature twice. Infact, India and Pakistan are the only teams with players involved in multiple double-century partnerships at the ground.
There have been a total of 17 partnerships of more than 200 runs at the ground (both English and non-English pairs), but only two for the sixth wicket or below. Jadeja has been involved in both these efforts as no home team player has managed the feat even once.
Overall, there have been 13 instances of a 200+ partnership for the sixth wicket or below in England (both home and away teams). Jadeja is the only the second player to feature in multiple partnerships alongside India's Rishabh Pant. Apart from the 2022 Edgbaston Test heroics with Jadeja, Pant also put up a 204-run partnership for the sixth wicket with KL Rahul in the 2018 Oval Test.
Jadeja is the only the fourth player in history from a visiting team to put up three 80+ scores in England while batting number seven or below after Sir Richie Haddlee, Ian Healy, and Kapil Dev. Had Jadeja got a ton, he would have been the first player from an away team to hit multiple tons in England from number seven or below.
