In what comes in as shocking news in the footballing world, Liverpool star forward Diogo Jota has been killed in a car crash in Spain. He was 28 years old. The superstar forward was an active part of the Liverpool team that won the Premier League in the 2024/25 season. He was also part of Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal side that won the UEFA Nations League this year. Diogo Jota's brother Andre Silva also reportedly died as he was accompanying the footballer in the car.
According to a report by Spanish daily Marca, the incident occurred at the city of Zamora, northwestern Spain. He recently got married on June 22 to Rute Cardoso. The couple also have three children.
Jota's 26-year-old brother was also a professional footballer. He played for Portuguese second-tier club Penafiel.
“Two young people die in an accident on the A-52 (Palacios de Sanabria). The Rionegro del Puente Fire Station (Northern Zone of the @DiputacionZA Consortium) responds,” Zamora’s Provincial Council said in a statement.
“The vehicle caught fire, and the flames spread to the vegetation. They were 28 and 26 years old. RIP," the statement further added.
Diogo Jota was born in the Portuguese city of Porto, and began his professional football career with the youth setup of Paços de Ferreira. He moved to Atletico Madrid in 2016. His move to English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2017 is what changed his career. His consistent performances for this side earned him a 45 million pound move to Liverpool in 2020. He won two Premier League titles with Liverpool.
He has scored a total of 136 goals in his club career in 398 matches. He has also made 66 assists. He has also played 49 games for Portugal, scoring 14 goals. He won two UEFA Nations Leagues with Portugal in 2019 and 2025.
