Shubman Gill continued the dream start to his captaincy tenure with the bat by scoring a double century in the second Test of the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham on Thursday (July 2) as India neared a total above the 500-run mark.
Gill made his captaincy debut for Team India in Test cricket at Leeds, where he made a knock of 147. In his second match leading India in Test cricket, Gill went even better by not just securing the highest score of his career in the longest format but also scoring a maiden double century.
Shubman Gill Creates History
The Indian captain is only the fifth player in history to achieve the rare double of a double ton in both Test and ODI cricket after Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle, and Rohit Sharma. Gill is the youngest player to complete the huge milestone in both formats and the first to do before turning 30.
As a result of his remarkable effort, Gill became only the sixth visiting captain (First Asian) in history to score a double century in England and only the second player to do so in the 21st century. The 25-year-old is the first player leading an away team to score a double century on English soil in two decades, with the last such effort coming from Graeme Smith in 2003. Gill is also the second-youngest double-centurion in England among captains after Smith.

The previous highest score by an Asian captain in England was by Sri Lanka's Tilakaratne Dilshan, when he made 193 at Leeds. Meanwhile, Gill also broke Mohammad Azharuddin's record set in 1990 for the highest individual score by an Indian captain in England when he made 179 runs at Manchester.
After reaching the double ton, Gill upped the ante and broke Sunil Gavaskar's 45-year-old record for the highest individual score by any Indian player in England. The 25-year-old is only the third Indian after Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid to score a double ton on English soil.

Gill is the youngest Indian to hit a double in England as well as the first captain of the Indian team to hit a double in an away nation. Only Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi reached the milestone at a younger age than him while leading India.
Overall, Gill is the seventh youngest player to reach the milestone (visiting player) in England.
The 25-year-old also broke Virat Kohli's record and has the highest individual score by an Indian captain Kohli had previously scored 254 against South Africa at Pune in 2019.
Gill also went past Sachin Tendulkar's record (241 vs Australia in 2004) for the highest individual score by an Indian outside Asia.
