Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir faced heat from all corners as cricket fans, pundits, as well as former cricketers, were left fuming with India's playing XI for the second Test against England, which started on Wednesday (July 2).
Following a five-wicket defeat in Leeds, India appeared to press the panic button as they made three changes, with the big one being Jasprit Bumrah's absence as the star pacer was rested to manage his workload, keeping the third Test at Lord's in mind.
Sai Sudharsan, who made his debut at Headingley, was dropped after just one chance, with Washington Sundar replacing him. Shardul Thakur also made way.
As soon as skipper Shubman Gill announced the decisions at the toss, social media was flooded with reactions, with Indian fans not pleased with the calls. India's decision to prioritise batting depth faced heavy backlash, as did the move to not play Kuldeep Yadav. Moreover, the decision to drop 23-year-old Sai Sudharsan after just one match was also a move that did not go well with cricket fans.
Some old remarks by head coach Gautam Gambhir also came to bite him.
Talking about the match, Ben Stokes won the toss and chose to bowl first. India were hit with an early blow as KL Rahul failed to capitalise on his good form and was dismissed for two runs by Brydon Carse. Yashasvi Jaiswal hit a half-century against England for the 7th consecutive game while putting up an 80-run partnership. Karun Nair was dismissed on the cusp of the lunch break after making 31 runs in 50 balls, which is the second-highest score of his Test career.
In the series opener, India made scores of 471 and 364 with five centuries to show for but still lost the match as the bowlers, apart from Jasprit Bumrah, failed to have an impact.
As far as Gambhir took over the India's head coach, the tenure has been a disaster in Test cricket with three wins in 11 matches and seven defeats in them with one draw so far. This run included India being whitewashed at home in a series of three or more matches for the first time after a humiliating 3-0 defeat against New Zealand. The Indian team also lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) after a decade.
