MS Dhoni is regarded as one of the best captains in the history of Indian cricket. India won all three ICC trophies, played during his time, under him and also reached the top spot in the ICC Test rankings for the first time. Dhoni captained India to 27 wins from 60 Tests. He was once the most successful India Test captain in terms of wins.
Dhoni played 90 Tests from 2005 till his retirement in 2014. He averaged 38.09. Dhoni scored 6 centuries in 144 innings he played. He hit 5 centuries in India and one ton in Pakistan. Dhoni never hit a century outside Asia.
India's present wicketkeeper, Rishabh Pant, has already broken several batting records held by Dhoni and he has gone past him in another elite list.
On day 2 of the Leeds Test against England, Rishabh pipped Dhoni in the list of Indian batsmen with most tons. He now has 7 centuries in red-ball cricket. He has 3 centuries in England, 2 in India, one in Australia and another one in South Africa.
Rishabh, who made his Test debut against England in 2018, is nearing the 3000-run mark. He can go past Dhoni in the elite list in the next couple of years.
Rishabh Pant is the present vice-captain of the Test team. Shubman Gill was recently appointed the new Test captain. He replaced Rohit Sharma.
Dhoni excelled in all three formats and he played 90 Tests, 350 ODIs and 98 T20Is. Rishabh hasn't been able to cement his spot in the white-ball teams yet. He stayed on the bench in the 2025 Champions Trophy, which India won.
While Rishabh has struggled in white-ball cricket, he has emerged as one of the best wicketkeeper-batsmen in Tests. He has been a regular in the Test team since his debut in 2018.
