Sri Lanka legend Angelo Mathews bid adieu to Test cricket after playing his last red-ball game against Bangladesh. Mathews had already announced that he would retire from Tests after playing the first Test of the two-match series. Wishes poured in for Mathews as he took the field in a Test match for the final time on Saturday (June 21).
ICC Chairman, Jay Shah, also reacted to Mathews' retirement and sent his wishes to the former SL captain. "Congratulations on a fantastic Test career, Angelo Mathews! More than 8000 runs across 16 years shows your dedication and longevity in whites, and sets an example for future stars of the game," he wrote on X.
Mathews finished his career with 8214 runs in 119 Test matches. He also scalped 33 wickets. Mathews hit 16 centuries and 45 half-centuries. He made his Test debut against Pakistan in Galle in 2009. 16 years later, he played his last Test match at the same venue.
Aged 25 years and 279 days, Mathews became Sri Lanka's youngest Test captain in 2013. He continues to hold the elite record.
The right-handed batsman scored 39 and 8 across two innings in his farewell Test match. He didn't bowl in the fixture. The series opener between the two teams ended in a draw. Following the game, Mathews said that he was overwhelmed with the love he has received since his retirement announcement.
"Since I announced my retirement, I can't believe the love that I have received so far. I am certainly overwhelmed. Ever so grateful to all those who supported me right throughout. It wasn't an easy journey, there were a lots of ups and downs, happiness and sadness. But through it all I was able to do it because of the support that I have received. (Emotional?) Well, obviously. Retiring from the best format, the format that I loved playing. It's time for the younger players to take the baton and drive Sri Lanka through," he said.
Mathews will continue to play T20Is and he aims to retire from white-ball cricket after the 2026 T20 World Cup. He hasn't played an ODI since the 2023 World Cup.
