Gautam Gambhir's Role Questioned In Rishabh Pant's Bizarre After Stunning Hundred: 'A Message Was Sent...' (Source: AP/X)
Rishabh Pant lit up Headingley with a breathtaking display of batting en route to his seventh Test ton that helped him leapfrog MS Dhoni in the list of most hundreds by an Indian wicketkeeper batter. Pant was at his fearless best and whacked 12 fours and six sixes during his 134-run knock. Pant looked set to decimate England further before a brain-fade moment caught him plumb. So often it happens with a few players who are at their absolute best when they are clear about the game they want to play. The moment doubts creep up in their mind, they get into trouble, exactly what happened with Pant.
Dinesh Karthik pointed out the same and said that coach Gautam Gambhir probably asked him to calm down after the wickets of Shubman Gill and Karun Nair, resulting in confusion, which eventually cost him his wicket.
“Also very interesting, when a message was sent out to Rishabh Pant, it curbed his style of play. He was just very carefree with his stroke making, and yet the feeling that a message was sent to tell him to calm down doesn't work for certain players, I guess,” said Dinesh Karthik on air.
“As a coach, it's completely understandable when you want to get a message across to the batter. But over time, you realise, for certain players, how you send that message becomes very important, what is the tone, what is the language used that gets the best out of the batter.
“Maybe with Rishabh Pant, it needs to be a different way in which you get things done,” said Karthik.
Meanwhile, India were off to a great start on Day 2 and looked set to get near the 600 run mark, however, a late collapse in the first session saw them slip from 430-3 to 471 all out.
The collapse helped England claw back in the game, and now they have real chance of putting India under pressure. The wicket is flat and India would feel they missed a great chance to bat England out of the game.
