With his Test century against England at Headingley, India's vice-captain Rishabh Pant won back Sunil Gavaskar. The Indian legend went from calling the batter "stupid stupid stupid" for his reckless batting against Australia to praising him as "superb, superb, superb" for his 140-ball century. Pant was in form at bat, joining Shubman Gill in a massive 209-run partnership that left the English bowlers perplexed for the whole of Day 1 and the first part of Day 2. His knock was full of his usual unconventional shots, leaving both the opponents and the audience amazed at his true abilities.
When Pant struck a shot during the fourth Test match against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground earlier this year in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, Gavaskar's remarks went viral.
The legendary batsman did not hold back when discussing Pant at the time, saying, "Stupid, stupid, stupid! You have two fielders there, you still go for that shot. You have missed the previous shot, and look where you have been caught. You have been caught at deep third man. That is throwing away your wicket. Not in the situation that India was. You have to understand the situation as well”.
After Pant's heroics in Leeds, where he reached his hundred in style and hit a six against Shoaib Bashir to reach triple digits, things took a turn for the worst. Then, to celebrate the achievement, he performed a front flip.
" Yes, superb, superb, superb, absolutely terrific batting by the young man," Gavaskar said in response to Pant's century.
After scoring 134 runs, Josh Tongue got one onto his pads from around the wicket, and ended his knock. Pant made a rare mistake in judgment that cost him the wicket. India fell apart after his departure and got all out for just 471.
