Sri Lanka legend Angelo Mathews' retirement marked the end of an era in Sri Lanka cricket. Matthews retired from the format after the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle. Matthews had a decent outing in the first innings and scored 39 runs. In the second innings, he failed to do much and was dismissed for eight.
Matthews was one of the greats of Sri Lanka cricket and served the country for more than 15 years in Test matches. He made his debut against Pakistan in 2009 and went on to score 8214 runs with 16 hundreds in 119 Tests. While he didn't bowl much in his last few years as a Test cricketer, he was a useful bowler and picked 33 wickets in over 600 overs he bowled in his career.

Meanwhile, Matthews got a special tribute ahead of his final day as a Test cricketer. Before the start of play, a massive cobra kite was seen flying above the ground with Matthews' name written on it. The fans also turned up in huge numbers to celebrate Matthews' illustrious career.

Meanwhile, Matthew expressed gratitude to his supporters and said that it is time for the younger generation to take Sri Lanka cricket forward. He also said that winning the series in England and whitewashing Australia at home were his best memories from his Test career.
"Since I announced my retirement, I can't believe the love I have received. Ever so grateful to all those who supported me. It wasn't an easy journey - lots of ups and downs. It's time for the younger players to take the baton and take SL cricket forward. (One memory that he'll take with him) To win against England in England and whitewash Australia in Sri Lanka. I am thankful to all the teammates, coaches, and the fans," Matthews said.

Meanwhile, the first Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh ended as a draw on a lifeless pitch that didn't provide any help to the bowlers.
