The performance of Shubman Gill's team against Ben Stokes' England in Leeds on Friday was the best start to his tenure as India's new Test skipper. On a belter of a surface at Headingley, India jumped out to a dominant start thanks to record-breaking tons from captain Gill and batter Yashasvi Jaiswal. Sachin Tendulkar even compared India's 2002 performance at Leeds, which featured three hundreds in an innings, to that performance.
Gill became the fifth Indian player to reach the three-figure mark on his captaincy debut after recording his first century outside of Asia in Test matches, while Jaiswal became the fifth Indian batter to reach the century mark in his first innings in England.
With vice-captain Rishabh Pant cruising to 65 not out and Gill undefeated at 127, India ended the day at 359 for three. Given the pitch's resilience, India would like to treble their first-innings percentage and hope to hold the hosts at bay twice, potentially aiming for one of their biggest team totals in England history.

Notably, India has only ever won a match in England after scoring 500 or more runs, with four previous attempts ending in draws and one in 1967. This was back in 2002 in Leeds. When India last won a Test series in England in 2007, they scored 664 runs at the Oval, which is their greatest Test total ever. India amassed a huge score in the first innings of the drawn match, driven by Anil Kumble's first Test century (110) and five fifties from the top seven batters.
In 2002, India achieved their then highest score in England at 628/8 decl. before winning an innings by to hundreds from Rahul Dravid (148), Tendulkar (193), and Sourav Ganguly (127). At the time of writing, India are batting at 393/3 after 95 overs with both Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill in middle, they can aim to get past it.
