Sai Sudharsan became the 317th player to don the India Test cap on the opening day of the first Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in Leeds. The left-handed batsman received his maiden Test cap from Cheteshwar Pujara, who batted at number 3 for India from 2012 to 2023. Sudharsan has big shoes to fill and he has his task cut out in the long run.
Sudharsan didn't have a memorable outing in his first innings as a Test cricketer and he departed for a four-ball duck. He got caught by wicketkeeper Jamie Smith off captain Ben Stokes' bowling.
Sudharsan's wicket gave England a chance to make their return in the game as India lost two wickets in the space of an over. Social media was flooded with posts for Sudharsan, who is likely to be given a long rope in the series.
Gujarat Titans (GT), Sudharsan's IPL team, also shared a post for him. The IPL 2022 Champions sent an encouraging message to their opener and wrote: "The best stories have a tough first chapter. Confident that our SaiSu will come back stronger in the next innings."
Sudharsan has been with GT since his IPL debut in 2022. He played 5 matches in 2022 and 8 games in 2023. He became a regular in 2024 and played 12 matches. Sudharsan played a key role in GT making it to the second round of IPL 2025 and piled up 759 runs to win the Orange Cap.
Sudharsan's success for GT saw him make his white-ball debut in 2023/24. And he is now capped in all three formats of the game. The 23-year-old will aim to score big if he gets a chance to bat in the second innings.
Courtesy of centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, India finished day 1 with a total of 359/3 on the board. Rishabh Pant finished the day with an unbeaten score of 65.
