Sai Sudharsan made his debut for India in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. Sudharsan was added to the India squad after a remarkable show in the IPL where he scored over 600 runs. The left-hand batter has some experience of the English conditions, having played County Cricket before, and India would hope that he carries over his IPL form in the Test series. Sudharsan is most likely to bat at number three during the Test series.
Meanwhile, the youngster got his maiden Test cap from none other than Cheteshwar Pujara, who occupied the number three position for nearly a decade.
Meanwhile, England won the toss and opted to bowl first. India also included Karun Nair in the playing XI for the first Test. Nair made a comeback to the team after 8 years. Shardul Thakur was preferred over Nitish Reddy in the India playing XI.
"Would've bowled first as well, might be a bit tough in the first session but it should be good to bat on later. Sun is out, should be a good batting deck for us. Preperation has been amazing, we played a practice game in Beckenham, lads are feeling great. Sai makes his debut, Karun comes in. Sai will bat at three," said Gill at the toss.
England (Playing XI): Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes(c), Jamie Smith(w), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir
India (Playing XI): Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill(c), Rishabh Pant(w), Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna
