'You Don’t Miss Someone Who Averages 33' - Michael Vaughan’s Cold Swipe at Virat Kohli Fuels IND-ENG Rivalry (Source: AP)
The wait for the blockbuster England-India Test series is over as the two teams are set to lock horns in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, from June 20. The series marks the beginning of a new era in Indian cricket under the leadership of Shubman Gill, who was named captain following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Kohli was more than just a great batter for India. His presence was intimidating, and his on-field persona kept the team fired up, even when they had the back against the wall.
Ahead of the first Test, former England captain Michael Vaughan made a huge remark on Virat Kohli. Vaughan highlighted Kohli's below-par average in England and said that India won't miss a batter who averaged 33 in the UK. Kohli played three series in England and scored 1096 runs at an average of 33 in 17 Tests. He had a horrible outing in his first tour in 2014, but bounced back in style, scoring 593 runs on the 2018 tour. Vaughan, however, said that Kohli's presence will certainly be missed in the dressing room.
"Kohli is a legend and a culture creator around this Indian team, and what he brought as a captain to the team is still there in terms of the energy and the drive, and the aggression. But he only averaged 33 here in the UK. You don’t massively miss someone that averages 33, but you miss someone that brings so much to the dressing room," Vaughan told Fox Cricket.
Vaughan further said that India have a seriously good team, adding that he won't be surprised if India play well in England.
“These players that are going to come in and play for India, they’re seriously good players. Maybe this new generation has been waiting. Maybe they’ve been waiting for this moment. Don’t be surprised that they play really well," he added.
