Temba Bavuma Suffers Big Setback Days After Leading South Africa To WTC Win (Source: AP)
Temba Bavuma scripted history as he led South Africa to a win in the World Test Championship. The Proteas defeated Australia in the final against all odds to win their first ICC Trophy after 27 years. South Africa's only ICC win came in the Champions Trophy in 1998. Since the win, the Proteas got close to the ICC trophy many times, but faltered at the last step which gave them the tag of 'chokers'.
Bavuma has been a remarkable captain for South Africa and is still undefeated after 10 Tests as captain.
South Africa's next assignment is a two-match Test series against Zimbabwe; however, Bavuma has suffered a big setback against of the series. Temba Bavuma played the WTC final with a hamstring injury, and the same has ruled him out of the Zimbabwe series. In the absence of Bavuma, Keshav Maharaj was named the captain of the Test side for the Zimbabwe tour. The squad is very different that took on Australia in the final, with five uncapped players included. However, it does come as a surprise as Zimbabwe is not the strongest teams in the world and South Africa can afford to test their bench strength against them.
The series will get underway on June 28, followed by the second Test on July 06. Both matches will be played at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.
