Shubman Gill etched his name in the history books after leading India for the first time in Test cricket during the opening Test match of the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between the Indian and English cricket teams at the Headingley Cricket Stadium in Leeds on Friday (June 20).
Gill, who replaced Rohit Sharma as captain following the latter's retirement from the longest format of the game, was named captain while Rishabh Pant was appointed as his deputy. While Gill has previously led India in T20 cricket, this is the first instance of leading the team in the longest format.
Shubman Gill Shatters Record Books
In the 93-year-old history of India playing Test cricket, Shubman Gill is India's fifth youngest captain behind only Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev and Ravi Shastri.

Overall, Gill is India's 37th Test captain and has the golden chance to create history on his first assignment as captain, which is among the toughest challenges in the sport. The 25-year-old has also changed his batting position and will bat at number four, which has been left empty after Virat Kohli bid adieu to the longest format. Gill's number three spot will be taken over by debutant Sai Sudharsan.
