India are currently taking on England in the first Test of the five-match series at the Headingly Cricket Ground from Fiday (June 20). This is the first Test that India are playing after the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Hence, under the captaincy of Shubman Gill, India have fielded a new look batting order. IPL 2025 Orange Cap winner Sai Sudharsan has made his debut in the longest format in this match. With his first Test cap, the Tamil Nadu batter has joined an exclusive list that features Kohli.
Sai Sudharsan becomes the sixth player to make his India Test debut on June 20. 14 years ago in 2011, Virat Kohli made his debut alongside Abhinav Mukund and Praveen Kumar against West Indies. On this day in 1996 against England, two Indian legends Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid made their Test debuts.

With Virat Kohli retiring, Shubman Gill has been confirmed to bat at his spot at no.4. At the toss, Gill confirmed that Sai Sudharsan will take his spot at no.3. Karun Nair, who makes his return to the India side after 8 years will come in at no.6.
"Would've bowled first as well, might be a bit tough in the first session but it should be good to bat on later. Sun is out, should be a good batting deck for us. Preparation has been amazing, we played a practice game in Beckenham, lads are feeling great. Sai makes his debut, Karun comes in. Sai will bat at three," Gill said at the toss
