India are all set to take on England in a crucial five-match Test Series with the first match beginning on June 20 (Friday) at Leeds. India will feature a new-look batting order with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma having retired from Test Cricket. Shubman Gill has been confirmed to replace Kohli at no.4. Kohli's retirement came as a blow, as many expected him to be part of the England tour. Shubman Gill has now revealed the chat that he had with head coach Gautam Gambhir after Kohli retired.
Speaking at the press conference before the 1st India Vs England Test in Leeds, Shubman Gill revealed that after Virat Kohli retired, he and Gautam Gambhir had a discussion as to whether he would move to no.4 in the batting order. After the discussion they were both clear that it was Gill who would replace Kohli in the batting order.
"There was, I mean after Virat Bhai retired, GG Bhai (Head coach Gautam Gambhir) and I had a discussion about it and we were both clear that he wanted me to bat at number four and I was also clear that I also wanted to bat at that number," Gill said.
Shubman Gill Remains Tight-Lipped On Who Would Bat At No.3
Shubman Gill dropping down to no.4 means that someone needs to fill in Gill's old spot of no.3. The two names that have been going around for this spot are Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair. Abhimanyu Easwaran's name is also in the mix. Shubman Gill has also not made it clear as to who will play.
When asked who would fill in the no.3 spot, Gill made it clear that they had not decided on the team combination, as the pitch has dried up significantly more than usual English pitches in the summer.
"We actually were waiting. The summer has been a little bit different to the other English summers, and it's been a little bit dry, so I was just waiting to see the wicket one last time to see the final combinations and decide on that," Gill said.
