A new era will start in Indian cricket when Shubman Gill-led India will take on England in a five-match Test series, starting June 20. Shubman was appointed India's Test captain following Rohit Sharma's Test retirement. Rishabh Pant was appointed the new vice-captain. Jasprit Bumrah assisted Rohit for more than 2 years.
Bumrah looked set to take over the Test captaincy after Rohit's retirement but his fitness issues saw him miss out. He was replaced by Rishabh as the vice-captain.
Rishabh has led India in the T20I format but this is the first time when he will be part of the leadership group on a full-time basis. Before the England tour, Hemang Badani opined that Gautam Gambhir should have 'captaincy, vice-captaincy' talk with him.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, the Delhi Capitals head coach said: "It's important that someone like Gautam Gambhir, the head coach, has a chat with him and speaks to him and says, 'Rishabh tu apna game khel.' Don't think too hard about captaincy, vice captaincy, you're the second in command, none of that."
"There is a certain way that you've played over the years and that has worked well for you. And I think it will work well for us if he does that again, because he is a batter who comes to the bat at times when the second new ball is due," he added.
Rishabh made his Test debut in 2018 and has been a regular in the squad since then. He has never been dropped from the playing XI since December 2020. Rishabh has led Delhi in domestic cricket.
Under him, Delhi reached the final of the 2017/18 Ranji Trophy season. He leads Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL. Before leading LSG, Rishabh captained Delhi Capitals for 3 seasons. Shubman leads Gujarat Titans in the T20 league.
