WTC Final, Australia vs South Africa, Lord's Cricket Ground: Pat Cummins has been hailed as the greatest Australia captain till date on social media, with some claiming that his achievements might have surpassed Steve Waugh, and Ricky Ponting's accomplishments. Cummins returned with figures of 6 for 28 against South Africa in the World Test Championship final at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground in London, after the Proteas won the toss and bowled Australia out for 212 on the first day of the Test match.
In response, South Africa could only manage 138, handing the Aussies a healthy 74-run lead on the second day of the Test match, courtesy of Cummins striking at regular intervals in the post-lunch session. He claimed five out of the six wickets to fall for the Proteas on the second day, propelling him to a joint-second position—shared with former Australian captain Richie Benaud (9) —on the prestigious list of most five-wicket hauls in Test cricket as captain. Former Pakistan captain Imran Khan leads with 11 five-fers.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan reserved high praise for Cummins and acknowledged his ability to strike when the Aussies needed something from him.
"I don’t remember a time when the Aussies needed something from Cummins that he didn’t deliver," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
In response, a user claimed, "There’s no doubt that Pat Cummins is Australia’s greatest captain to date. He has far surpassed Steve Waugh, Ponting, and others," while another user reckoned, "He is the Bumrah of Australia."
"He is perfect bowler and captain," another user wrote, as one user concluded, "Cummins is the best captain of 21st century along with Dhoni."
Having won the ICC World Cup 2023 and the World Test Championship 2023, Cummins' leadership has been marked by significant victories, solidifying his legacy as one of Australia's most successful cricket captains. He has captained Australia in 34 Test matches and has a win percentage of 58.82, while Ricky Ponting having captained Australia in 77 matches has a win percentage of 62.33. Steve Waugh, however, has the best win percentage among the three, having captained Australia in 57 Test matches, and ending with a win percentage of 71.92.
