A moment of confusion unfolded at Lord’s on Day 2 of the World Test Championship Final 2025 between Australia and South Africa when SA batter David Bedingham found himself at the centre of a debatable incident.
The incident unfolded during a relatively quiet passage of play. Australia’s Webster delivered a length ball that moved back ever so slightly off the seam. Bedingham played a front-batted defence but got a thick inside edge that left the ball in the flap of his front pad.
However, he immediately took it out and put it on the ground when wicketkeeper Alex Carey rushed forward to collect the ball. Bedingham's casual act left the Aussies in a bit of perplexity, one that left players, commentators, and fans equally perplexed.
Replays indicated that Usman Khawaja signalled an appeal for “handling the ball”. Umpire Richard Illingworth consulted his colleague before ruling it a dead ball, leaving many to wonder whether the appeal had any merit.
“What is happening here?” echoed the commentary box as players and umpires exchanged smiles. Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden, on-air for JioStar, clarified: “The ball is considered dead once it gets dislodged from the pad.”
The moment may not have resulted in a wicket, but it certainly sparked a new chapter in the WTC’s growing archive of quirky laws and grey areas. With high stakes and emotions running high, this incident is sure to dominate post-day discussions.
