Pat Cummins etched his name in the history books as he put another captain's performance to put Australia in the driver's seat in the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa, currently taking place at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground.
After South Africa put up a fightback on Day 2 following a dismal end to the first day, where they were reduced to 42-4. While the Proteas made a strong start, it was Cummins who brought the defending champions back on track by taking five of the six wickets that fell, which included the dismissals of Temba Bavuma, Kyle Verreynne, Marco Jansen, David Bedingham, and Kagiso Rabada. He finished with figures of 6/28 having dismissed Wiaan Mulder on the first day.

Cummins now has the most wickets in the finals of the ICC events with 12 wickets and has broken the record of teammate Mitchell Starc. Before this match started, Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami (10) held the record. Cummins is also the first bowler to take 10 wickets in the history of the WTC finals, breaking Shami's record (8).

The Australian star has become the first captain to take 10 wickets as captain in the summit clash of ICC events. With his four-wicket haul, Cummins broke his record for the best bowling figures by a captain in an ICC final. The Australian legend is the first captain to take a five-wicket haul in a summit clash of a global event.

Cummins has also become the first bowler in history to take a six-wicket haul in a final of an ICC event. Previously, South Africa's Jacques Kallis (5/30 vs West Indies, ICC Knockout Trophy 1998), New Zealand's Kyle Jamieson (5/31 vs India, WTC Final 2021), West Indies' Joel Garner (5-38 vs England, 1979 World Cup), Australia's Gary Gilmour (5/48 vs West Indies, 1975 Cricket World Cup) and Proteas pacer Kagiso Rabada (5/51 vs Australia, WTC final 2025) took five-wicket hauls in summit clash of ICC tournaments.
Cummins also has the best bowling figures by a captain at Lord's, breaking Bob Willis' record set against India in 1992 (6/101).
Moreover, Cummins completed his 10th five-wicket haul in the WTC. He is the fourth player to achieve the feat after Ravichandran Ashwin (11), Nathan Lyon (10), and Jasprit Bumrah (10). Cummins took a four-wicket haul for the 20th time in the competition and is the first pacer to achieve the feat, and the third bowler alongside Lyon and Ashwin. Bumrah is second on the elite list.

With the wicket of Bavuma, Cummins broke a long-standing record of former Australian captain Richie Benaud for the most wickets taken by a captain of the opposition team in the history of the sport in the longest format.

Cummins is also the third most wickets by a bowler as captain in Test history behind Imran Khan (187) and Benaud. This is the 9th five-wicket haul for the 32-year-old as captain, which is the joint-second most for a player while leading the team, alongside Benaud. Only Imran has more.
The Australian captain completed 300 wickets in Test cricket and is the eighth Australian bowler to achieve the feat. Among bowlers with more than 300 Test wickets, Cummins has the fourth-best strike-rate (45.7) behind Kagiso Rabada, Dale Steyn, and Waqar Younis as well as the fifth-best average (22.08) behind Malcom Marshall, Curtly Ambrose, Fred Trueman, and Glenn McGrath.
Meanwhile, Cummins (79) also went past Jasprit Bumrah (77) and now has the most wickets in this 2023-25 edition of the WTC. This is also the most by any pacer in a single edition of the competition.
