Indian cricket legend Rohit Sharma and two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu led reactions from the cricket fraternity over the horrific tragedy in Ahmedabad on Thursday (June 12) as a plane crashed in the city near the airport.

For those unversed, Air India flight AI 171, which took off from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and was scheduled to fly to London's Gatwick airport, crashed shortly after taking off in near the BJ Medical College.

242 people were in the plane, and several people were rushed to the hospital, while more details on the incident are still awaited.

"Air India confirms that flight AI171, from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, was involved in an accident today after take-off. The flight, which departed from Ahmedabad at 1338 hrs, was carrying 242 passengers and crew members on board the Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals. The injured are being taken to the nearest hospitals," said a statement by the airline.

"Shocked to hear about the plane crash in Ahmedabad today. Praying for all those affected and thoughts with their families," wrote Virat Kohli on Instagram.

"Really sad and disturbing news from Ahmedabad. Prayers to all the lives lost and their families," wrote Rohit Sharma on Instagram.

"Heartbroken by the visuals coming in from Ahmedabad. My prayers and thoughts are with everyone involved. May God give strength to the families of the victims. Om Shanti," wrote Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Neeraj Chopra.

"Shocked to hear about the tragic plane crash of Air India Ahmedabad-London flight. Thoughts and prayers to all the lives lost. Wishing safety of every resident in the affected area," wrote Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav on Instagram.

"Really saddened to hear about the tragic crash in Ahmedabad today. My thoughts and prayers to all the victims and families. May you have the strength to bare this loss. Also praying for strength to all the first responders," wrote superstar cricketer Rashid Khan on Instagram.

"Heartbreaking to hear about the crash in Ahmedabad. Prayers and strength to the families of those affected," wrote Indian cricket star Hardik Pandya.

Jasprit Bumrah took to Instagram and put up heartbreak emojis while sharing the Mumbai Indians' post.

"Deeply saddened by the tragic crash of Air India flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London today, June 12, 2025. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of all 242 souls on board. May love surround every grieving heart and strength find those left behind," wrote two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu on X.

"Absolutely heart broken to hear about the devastating crash in Ahmedabad today. I am deeply saddened and my condolences to the family of the loved ones. Prayers and strength for the survivors and their families during this moment of sorry," wrote Siraj on Instagram.

"Prayers for the families and people on the Air India flight. my heart sunk hearing the news of the crash .. praying praying praying," wrote tennis legend Sania Mirza.

"Heartbreaking news about the #AirIndia plane crash in Ahmedabad. Thoughts and prayers with the passengers, crew, and families affected . May they find strength in this difficult time," wrote Yuvraj Singh on X.

"Heartbreaking news from Ahmedabad. Prayers for everyone," said ex-Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik. on X.

"Thoughts with every soul impacted by the crash near Meghani. Wishing strength and prayers to their loved ones," said Shikhar Dhawan on X.

"Ohhh God. Thoughts and prayers," wrote Aakash Chopra on X.

"I am utterly shocked and deeply anguished to learn about the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims and their families who are enduring unimaginable pain and loss. In moments like these, words feel so inadequate, but I hope that those affected find strength, courage, and support. My heart goes out to everyone impacted by this tragedy," Harbhajan Singh posted on X.

Several IPL franchises also took to social media to pay condolences to those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
