When he first entered the international scene in 1991, former India opener Vinod Kambli was one of the most talked-about cricket players. However, after failing to maintain his form, Kambli disappeared, and it was his own fault. He admitted to becoming an alcoholic and was rumoured to be partying until late at night. Yograj Singh, the father of former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, has now revealed that he had advised Kambli to concentrate on his career, but the former cricketer refused to take his advice.
"I told Vinod Kambli once, 'These parties, smoking cigarettes, going to girls - stop it; otherwise you'll be finished, and you'll be crying. See what happened to him. I was talking to him personally but then he said, 'Sir, apka time chala gaya (your time has passed). He used to think, 'I'm the king'. You are not bigger than the game," Yograj told InsideSport.
Kambli's terrible health and financial difficulties were the last factors to bring him back into the spotlight. The 52-year-old has been battling a number of illnesses. He was hospitalized at Akruti Hospital in Thane on December 21, 2024, due to cramping and a urinary infection. Kambli is dealing with a severe financial issue in addition to his worsening health.
Andrea Hewitt, Kambli's wife, disclosed earlier this year that she had originally filed for divorce in 2023 but changed her mind after witnessing her husband's 'helpless state'.
In an interview with Suryanshi Pandey, Andrea disclosed that she had considered leaving Kambli in the past but was always concerned about his well-being.
"He will be helpless if I leave him. He is like a child, and that hurts me. It makes me feel worried. I would not even leave a friend, but he is more than that. I remember there were moments when I would just walk away. But then I would be worried: Has he eaten or not? Is he on the bed properly? Is he okay? Then I had to check on him, and I would understand that he needed me," she said.
