- Smith broke multiple records
Steve Smith etched his name in the history books as he continued his golden run of form in Test cricket during the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final between Australia and South Africa at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground during the first day of play on Wednesday (June 11).
Smith walked out to bat in the eighth over after South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl first. Kagiso Rabada made the best use of the overcast conditions as he dismissed Usman Khawaja (0) and Cameron Green (4) in the seventh over.
Marco Jansen also got the wickets of Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head in the first session but Smith ensured that Australia remained on track in challenging conditions with a knock of 66 in 111 balls before Aiden Markram dismissed him.
Steve Smith Creates History
Smith etched his name in the history books and broke a 99-year-old world record of Warren Bardsley for the most runs by a non-English batter at Lord's. This is the fifth time the former Australian captain has crossed the 50-run mark at the venue and is only the second overseas player after Shivnarine Chanderpaul to achieve the feat. He previously scored a double century at Lord's against England in 2015, a knock of 92 in 2019, and a century in 2023.
As far as Smith is concerned, he also has the second most runs by a visiting batter in England, with only Don Bradman ahead of him in the list. Smith (18) also broke Viv Richards' record (17) for the most 50+ scores by a non-English batter in England in Test cricket.

Steve Smith - The Man For The Big Stage
Smith also broke Ajinkya Rahane's record and became the first player to score 200 runs in the summit clash of the WTC. Previously, the 36-year-old hit a ton against India in the 2023 final at the Oval. He made a knock of 121 in the first innings while also making 34 runs in the second innings.
Smith is the first player with multiple 50+ scores in the WTC final. Rahnae, Alex Carey, Devon Conway, Travis Head, Shardul Thakur, and Kane Williamson have also made half-centuries in the summit clash of the tournament. Head is the only other player with a century so far apart from Smith.
