India are all set to take on England in a five-match Test Series from June 20, which marks their first campaign in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27. The team will be, for the first time in years, without the services of Virat Kohli, as the superstar batter has announced his retirement from Test cricket. There were rumours as to who would replace him at the no.4 spot in the batting lineup. While captain Shubman Gill is reportedly leading the race, Karun Nair too has staked his claim in that spot with some brilliant form in the two unofficial Tests vs England Lions. However, former England star Monty Panesar had named someone else entirely.
In an interaction with InsideSport, Monty Panesar has named Sai Sudharsan has the capability to take the role of Virat Kohli in the no.4 spot in the Test batting order for India. He also said that he would like the Team to carry on Kohli's legacy in Test cricket.
"There are some really good youngsters in the team at the moment. One particular batsman is a Surrey player, Sai Sudharsan. He looks very aggressive and fearless. He's a player who's done well in English conditions and for Surrey. I think he could be the next superstar of Indian cricket and take on the role that Virat Kohli did at number four,” Panesar said.
“The one thing I’d like this Indian Team do is carry on the legacy of Virat Kohli. The way he played Test cricket, I would like to see the young Indian Team play like that,” the former spinner added.
Not Decided On Batting Order: Shubman Gill
New India Test Captain Shubman Gill stated that the team have not decided on what the batting order might be vs England. He stated that they will only decide on it after the intra-squad match between India and India A followed by a 10-day camp.
"We haven't really decided on the...we still have some time. We will be playing intra-squad match and we will be having a 10-day camp in London, so we still have a little bit of time. I think we can decide on the batting order once we go there," Gill said in the press conference before Team India departed for England.
