The stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru amid Royal Challengers Bengaluru's celebration on June 4 shook the conscience of the nation. And the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) did not take the mishap lightly which claimed 11 lives and left several others injured.
The celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru winning the IPL 2025 was a public event -approved by the Karnataka state government and facilitated by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) - and BCCI had little role to play there. But the incident left a deep scar in the minds of cricket fans, and BCCI does not want to let it go unaddressed.
Taking a strong measure on the mismanagement that led to the disaster, BCCI on Monday punished the KSCA by shifting the three-match ODI series between India 'A' and South Africa 'A', scheduled to be held from November 13 to 19 in Bengaluru, to Rajkot. The BCCI issued a press release about the change in venue.
"The South Africa Men’s A Team will face India A in two multi-day matches and three one-day games, starting October 30, 2025. While the two multi-day matches will continue to be held at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru, the three one-day games have been moved from M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot," the BCCI stated in the press release.
Women's World Cup Matches Uncertain
Although the KSCA president Raghuram Bhat said the change is not related to the stampede, people close to the Indian cricket administration refused to buy his ovservations.
With the ICC Women's World Cup scheduled in India and Sri Lanka in September-November, with Bengaluru being a key venue, the situation after the stampede might force the ICC to look for an alternative venue, reported Times of India.
With the fan frenzy last week inflicting significant damage to the structure, including compound walls, railings, the staircase, and sanitation, the stadium needs to undergo renovation before hosting any matches.
As per the schedule released by the ICC earlier this month, M Chinnaswamy Stadium is one of the five venues in India set to host the marquee tournament, with the venue scheduled to host the opening contest involving India (on September 30), one semifinal (October 30), and the final (November 2) if Pakistan do not qualify, in that case the summit clash will be held in Colombo.
